Neil Warnock’s sacking from Crystal Palace on Saturday bucked the trend for managerial departures this season – after it became the longest period since the start of a campaign that a manager had been relieved of his duties in 18 years.
Palace confirmed they had dismissed the 66-year-old in a statement on their website following the club’s 3-1 home defeat against Southampton on Boxing Day, which kept the Premier League side in the relegation zone.
The news not only meant Warnock is the first manager in England’s top-flight to have been let go this season, but also meant his four months in charge of Palace was the third-longest period from the beginning of a season in which a manager hadn’t been sacked.
Ahead of Warnock is Roy McFarland, who parted ways with Bolton Wanderers in January 1996 while Chelsea waited until February 15 1993 to relieve Ian Porterfield of his duties.
